Recently, I visited Japan from December 31, 2016 to January 14, 2017 and I want to share my experience with you. Aside from the warm welcome I received from my parents in law, I had a special experience as a person with disability who walks with the support of both a wheelchair or a pair of forearm crutches. In this article, accessibility in some of the cities and areas visited will be compared to New York City (NYC) while referencing the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990.
On January 2, 2017, I visited one of the oldest neighborhoods in Yokohama called Chinatown with my wheelchair and I was so surprised to see that many of the restaurants in the area had elevators. The attendant said, “Sir, you are welcome. Please there is an elevator behind you, which will help you go to the other floors in case you don’t want to sit down here.” I was amazed because many expensive restaurants in NYC
